What is a Water-Cooled Scroll Chiller?
A water-cooled chiller is a type of HVAC system that uses water to cool the environment. In this type of chiller, hot water produced by the system enters the water-cooled condenser and is cooled by water flowing through a cooling tower. The scroll compressor is a type of refrigeration compressor that compresses the refrigerant gas using two interleaved spiral elements.
Main Components of a Water-Cooled Scroll Chiller
1.Scroll Compressor
This compressor contains two spirals that rotate around each other to compress the refrigerant gas.
- Evaporator
A type of heat exchanger where a liquid reaches its boiling point and evaporates. Evaporators are usually of the shell & tube or plate type.
- Water-Cooled Condenser
The hot, compressed refrigerant from the compressor enters the condenser, where it is cooled by water and changes from a gas to a liquid state.
- Expansion Valve (EXV)
The expansion valve works opposite to the compressor; it reduces the high pressure from the condenser and prepares the refrigerant for entry into the evaporator.
- Pumps and Water Piping
The system water pump and cooling tower pump circulate water throughout the system.
Technical Specifications
- Cooling Capacity: Typically ranges from a few tons to 300 tons of refrigeration (TR); the actual capacity depends on the inlet/outlet water temperatures and the cooling tower conditions.
- Compressor Type: Hermetic scroll compressor with low noise, low vibration, and high efficiency.
- Refrigerant: R407C, R134a, or R410A, depending on capacity, environment, and environmental regulations.
- Evaporator: Shell & tube or plate type.
- Condenser: Water-cooled type.
- Voltage: Single-phase or three-phase.
