As mentioned, this type of air hndler has a similar function to conventional air handlers, with the only difference being that in addition to the complete airtightness of the body, a more advanced filtration system has been implemented in the hygienic air handling unit. The air conditioner system is used with cooling devices such as chillers or heating devices such as boilers because the air handling unit is not a heat and cooling device, but only a device that distributes cold and hot air. This means that the fluid is cooled in the chiller device and heated in the boiler device and is pumped to the coils (copper finned tubes) of the air handler by a pump. So, using a fan, fresh air is blown around the coils (finned copper tubes) and the air is cooled or heated as the air hits the cold or hot surface of the coils. Note that the cooled or heated air exiting this device is sent to different parts of the industrial hall or building through ducting and will have the same temperature everywhere.

Unique features of hygienic air handling units

The features of a hygienic air handling units are the same as those of a regular air conditioner and consist of various parts of the body, a centrifugal ventilation fan and a heating and cooling electric motor, humidity regulating equipment, inlet and outlet channels, etc. However, its main difference is in the air filtering process, which is usually done in three stages. The way an air handling unit filters is that in the first stage of filtration, the air passes through a metal mesh filter to prevent coarse solid pollutants from entering the hygienic air conditioner.

The air then passes through bag filters, where up to 95 percent of airborne particles and contaminants are removed. After the air passes through the fan, it enters the third stage of filtration

Special HEPA and ULPA filters are used in this stage, which provides final air purification and removes 99.99 percent of pollutants (particles with a diameter between 0.1 and 0.3 microns) from the air. This is why only this type of air handling unit is used in places such as hospitals as hospital air handlers and other sensitive places.

The body of the hygienic air handling unit is usually made of all-steel and completely airtight to prevent the entry of contaminated air and the decay of its body, because otherwise the device itself will become a source of contamination. Also, all metal parts and components of the hygienic air conditioner must be made of stainless steel or have an anti-corrosion coating. Also, the material of non-metallic parts used in the device must be selected in a way that is not susceptible to the formation of colonies of microorganisms on it.
